Who's behind this
I'm Matt Giblin, and I'm new to gardening. I live in Maryland, and when I started trying to plant natives I kept hitting the same walls: Which plants are actually native here? When do I plant them? And is the "native wildflower mix" at the store the real species or a bred lookalike?
The answers were scattered across university extension pages, plant databases and seller listings that didn't agree with each other. So I started pulling it into one place, state by state, and the Native Seed Directory is the result.

- Real local timing: frost dates from NOAA weather-station records and a sowing calendar for your state.
- Honest buying notes: whether a seller offers the true wild species or a cultivar, and when a listing was last checked.

How it's made and paid for
Plant data comes from public botanical references, mainly the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center; photos come from Wikimedia Commons with credit to each photographer. Seller listings are checked by hand. The site earns affiliate commissions on some links and may show ads; neither changes which plants are listed or what I say about them. How it works has the full methodology, and the privacy notice covers what the site does and doesn't collect.
