What this is
The Native Seed Register is a state-by-state directory of native plants that answers two questions most plant lists skip: what does this plant need, and if I try to buy it, will I get the real thing? It covers all 50 states and 551 species.
How a plant gets on a state's list
A species appears on a state page when state and regional native-plant references document it as native there. The register records the states for each species; a plant native to 30 states appears on 30 pages with the same growing data and buying note. We do not list a plant for a state just because it is sold there.
Where the growing conditions come from
Sun, water, soil, bloom time, height and wildlife value are taken from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Native Plant Database at the University of Texas at Austin, species by species. When that profile does not record a field, the entry says "not recorded" rather than filling the gap from a less reliable source. A small number of species — mostly Hawaiian natives — have no wildflower.org profile and are marked accordingly.
What the buying note means
For each species we looked for a genuine, in-stock seed or live-plant listing for that exact species. Wild species means the listing is the straight species. Usually a bred variety means the common listings are cultivars or hybrids. No live listing means our last check found nothing genuine — 166 species are in that state today, and many are woody plants better bought from a regional native nursery. Every buying note carries the date it was verified; the most recent pass was 16 Sep 2026.

Limits
Nativity is recorded at the state level; a species native to a state may not be native to your county or ecoregion, so check your county or state native plant society list before planting. Bloom months are the recorded range for the species and shift with latitude and elevation.
